Coaching career

After Atkinson ended his playing career, he became coach of Kettering Town in 1971 . He joined Cambridge United in 1974 . With Cambridge he rose from the fourth English division to the second highest within four years. In 1978 Atkinson took over his first division club, West Bromwich Albion . In the 1978/1979 season he was immediately third in the league with the Baggies. In June 1981 Atkinson became the manager of Manchester United . His first success with the Red Devils was in the 1982/1983 season when he won the English Cup . In 1985 the cup title was won again. After a bad season for Atkinson in Manchester , he took over West Bromwich Albion again in the fall of 1987. After only a year at his first big club, the Englishman went to Spain . There he was coach of Atlético Madrid for a year . In 1989 she returned to her home country. From 1989 to 1991 he was the coach of Sheffield Wednesday . With Sheffield he won the League Cup in 1990/91 . From 1991 to 1994 he was again in Birmingham at Aston Villa . At the Villans he was again League Cup winner. Despite the success, he was fired in 1994 and came to Coventry City for a year. Atkinson did his last coaching job at Nottingham Forest in 1999.

Further career

After his career he became a football expert for an English TV station. It was there that his “new language”, the “Ronglish”, was invented. It was really just football-related phrases that make comparisons with normal life. Due to his witty demeanor and his eye-catching jewelry, he was often portrayed as the loving prankster of the English media. That all changed on April 21, 2004 when Atkinson made racist slogans against Marcel Desailly - without knowing he was on the air. His saying about the Italian soccer player Francesco Totti during the soccer world championship in 2002 became known beyond the English borders. Atkinson said of Totti's new hairstyle: "He looks like a little whore". He also said that Chinese women are the ugliest in the world.
