Marcel Odenkey Addy-Desailly (born September 7, 1968 in Accra , Ghana ; originally Odonkey Abbey ) is a former French football player .

Club career

The center- back began his career at FC Nantes , which he joined when he was eleven and remained loyal until 1992. After a year and a half at Olympique Marseille , which was stripped of the championship title - it would have been Desailly's only title in Division 1 - he moved to AC Milan in November 1993 ; he stayed here until 1998, before organizing the defense of Chelsea for the next six years . Between October 2004 and November 2005, he let his career end with two clubs in Qatar ( Al-Gharafa and Qatar Sports Club ).

National player

The unspectacular but highly effective playing Marcel Desailly was just as indispensable in the French national team as in his clubs : between August 1993 and June 2004 he played 116 international matches, scored three goals and was their captain 50 times. Since April 30, 2003 he was the sole French record international before Lilian Thuram replaced him in June 2006.

He has helped shape all of the great successes of the Equipe Tricolore since the 1990s. His first major tournament was the 1996 European Championship in England . At the 1998 World Cup he was world champion and took part in all the games in the tournament. The only negative thing for him on the day of the 3-0 final win against Brazil in Paris was his yellow-red card in the 68th minute of the game.

Two years later he was in the final of the European Championship 2000 and was also European champion against Italy .

The lowest points in his national team career were the 2002 World Cup in South Korea , when his team were eliminated as defending champions without scoring a goal in the preliminary round, and the failure in the quarter-finals of the 2004 European Championship in Portugal against Greece (0: 1).
