Christian Karembeu [ kʀisˈtjɑ̃ kaʀɑ̃ˈbø ] (born December 3, 1970 on Lifou in New Caledonia ) is a former French soccer player and currently strategic advisor at the Greek soccer club Olympiacos Piraeus .
The person of Christian Karembeu
The defensive midfielder, who occasionally also played in right midfield or in defense, grew up as the son of a Melanesian family ( Kanaks ) in the French overseas territory of New Caledonia with 17 siblings. At the end of the 1980s he came to FC Nantes and began his career as a professional player (first appearance in Division 1 in May 1991). Karembeu was seen as headstrong in the best sense of the word, but at the same time capable of getting involved in new experiences; For example, he has willingly switched to rigid European time management. Problems that occasionally arose at his various clubs and in the national team also arose in part from the reactions of fellow players and superiors to the opinionated and self-confident Melanesian.
Karembeu always refused to sing the French national anthem before games . He justified this with the fact that in 1931 two of his uncles were exhibited in a human zoo during the Paris colonial exhibition .
Outside of football, among other things, he has campaigned for an end to French nuclear weapons tests in the South Pacific . From 1998 to 2011 he was married to the Slovak model Adriana . At the end of 2011 he moved to Champéry, Switzerland . In May 2017 he married the Lebanese ski racer Jacky Chamoun .
The club career
Christian Karembeu has been under contract with clubs in six European countries and has won these titles with three of them. The greatest success at club level was winning the UEFA Champions League twice with Real Madrid (1998 and 2000).
The national player
Between November 1992 and March 2002 Christian Karembeu played a total of 53 times for the French national team (eight appearances during his time at Nantes, 20 at Genoa, 16 at Madrid, seven at Middlesbrough and two at Piraeus) and scored one goal. For years he was an integral part of the team and helped France win the 1998 World Cup (four games, including a semi-final and a final), the 2000 European Championship (one game) and the 2001 Confederations Cup (three games, including a semi-final and a final ) finished as the winner.
The fact that he was not used in spite of all his class was due to the fact that his role on the field corresponded to that of the long-time team captain Didier Deschamps and the defense of the Équipe Tricolore with Thuram , Blanc , Desailly and Lizarazu was always "set".
When Karembeu got the feeling that national coach Roger Lemerre did not intend to nominate him for the 2002 World Cup , he ended the chapter on his own initiative and announced his resignation.
After the professional career
Following his career as a professional footballer, Karembeu became an entrepreneur in the bakery business, he became a FIFA Oceania Ambassador, from 2006 he appeared at France Télévisions and from 2008 at Orange Sport as an expert on football broadcasts. In 2010 and 2011 he was the TV host of the documentary series "Des îles et des hommes" (German: islands and people) at Trace.
In the summer of 2013 he took up the post as Strategic Advisor to Olympiacos. As a co-author, he worked on the script for the television film "Kanak, l'histoire oubliée" (German: The forgotten story of the Kanaks), which describes his life story and was broadcast in 2015.
In January 2018, Karembeu hosted his indoor tournament with former football greats in his home town of Champéry.
