Lifou ( Drehu in the local language of the same name) is the largest upscale atoll of the Loyalty Islands (French: Îles Loyauté ) in the South Pacific New Caledonia with an area of around 1200 km² . There are stalactite caves filled with water on the island .

The common language of the island's 8,627 inhabitants is the oceanic language, Drehu . The official language French is generally understood and used equally.

The island is divided into three chief districts, the borders of which run from the Baie de Châteaubriand in the east of the island in a straight line to the north-west and south-west. These are the districts of Wetr (seat: Hnathalo ) in the north, Gaïca (seat: Drueulu ) in the west and Lössi (seat: Mu ) in the south. The island of Tiga , 34 km further east , and the Île Vauvilliers, which is 1.85 km² smaller and 11 km away, also belong to Lössi and thus also to the municipality of Lifou .

, capital of the Province of the Loyalty Islands and administrative center of Lifou, consists of the tribes ( tribe ) Luecila , Qanono and Hnasse lying on the east coast along the Baie de Châteaubriand . Located on the border of the three chief districts, Wé used to be a battleground. The first mission station on the island was built here in 1842 by the Protestant missionary Fao.

The island's airfield is located at the settlement of Wanaham (alternative spelling: Ouanaham ) about 20 km north of Wé and offers regular scheduled connections to Nouméa .
