history

Like many other towns in New Caledonia, Pouembout emerged from a penal camp that was set up in 1883. Since the area was relatively fertile and well suited for growing grain and raising livestock, French immigrants also settled here. The village of Pouembout was founded in 1889.

For several years now, Pouembout and the neighboring Koné have been expanded as planned into an industrial and school center, which is to form a counterpoint to the capital Nouméa in northern New Caledonia. In Voh , the Usine du Nord factory for nickel processing went into operation in 2012 , and by 2015 the three cities Koné, Voh and Pouembout are to form an agglomeration of 16,000 inhabitants.

Sights and architecture

Pouembout is the seat of the administration of the Northern Province of New Caledonia. A round square was laid out in front of the prestigious administration center L'hôtel de la province Nord , on which a round residential building with totem poles that could be seen from afar was erected in the traditional way.

The Le Pigonnier building, built in colonial style in 1898 , now houses various offices. The country house Chateau Grimini , which houses the community library and is also used for cultural events, dates from 1886 .
