history

Boulouparis was founded in 1868 as a military base. In 1878 there was a revolt in which almost 30 settlers were killed, including three telegraph operators. A plaque at the post office commemorates them.

Economy and sights

Boulouparis is the center of an agriculturally relatively intensively used area. Among other things, pumpkins are grown that are exported to Japan. The most important fish breeding station in New Caledonia is located on the Ouenghi River. Deer and shrimp are also raised near the place. Every year in May, the city celebrates a special festival dedicated to deer and shrimp. Boulouparis has schools, town hall, church and shops. The small port is located several kilometers from the center, as Boulouparis is not directly on the sea.

The famous beach Plage Bouraké is located on a peninsula near the village, which is particularly popular with surfers and divers because of its sheltered location and its abundance of fish. From here trips to the small offshore island of Ilot Ténia are offered, around which a marine nature reserve has been established.
