Aires coutumières

An aire coutumière is a special form of an administrative unit in New Caledonia that exists parallel to the other administrative units there.

The facility goes back to the Matignon Agreement of 1988 and was legally established in 1999.

Among other things, it serves to elect the members of the Sénat coutumier , who is supposed to uphold the rights of the Kanaks , the indigenous people of New Caledonia. The Aires coutumières are also responsible for private law matters relating to the special status of the Kanaks, their language and their culture. They extend over the territory of a municipality or areas or parts of several municipalities and are in turn subdivided into districts coutumiers .
