District coutumier
A District coutumier (also Grande-chefferie , German roughly: domain ) is a special form of an administrative unit in New Caledonia , which, as a subdivision of an Aire coutumière , exists parallel to the other administrative units there.
The facility goes back to the Matignon Agreement of 1988 and was legally established in its current form in 1999. The historical origin is the Décision gouvernatoriale n ° 840 of August 8, 1898.
The Districts coutumières are responsible in their area for private law matters relating to the special status of the Kanaks , their language and their culture. They each cover the area of a tribe or several tribes and each have a grand chef (German about: Oberhäuptling ). There are a total of 57 districts coutumières.
