Sénat coutumier
The Sénat coutumier is the highest representative of the Kanaks in New Caledonia .
He is to be consulted on every political decision in New Caledonia, which concerns the rights of the Kanaks, the private law matters in relation to the special status of the Kanaks, their language and their culture. He can reject corresponding bills or introduce them himself.
In the Aires coutumières, the members are elected exclusively by the Kanaks.
