The Belep Islands are a small group of islands that belong to the French overseas territory of New Caledonia and form a commune of the Northern Province . The main island of the group with an area of ​​52.6 km² is Île d'Art . The second largest island is Île Pott to the northwest of it with 15 km², followed by Île Dau Ac in the south with 1.5 km².

The municipality of Belep is located northwest of the main islands of Grande Terre between the reefs that extend on both sides over the main island of New Caledonia, the New Caledonian Barrier Reef . The main town of the municipality is Waala on the west coast of the main island Île d'Art. There is a small airfield southeast of Waala.

history

The Belep Islands were named after a Kanak chief who ruled there in ancient times. The Catholic Church established a mission there in 1856 . A leper colony existed on the islands from 1892 to 1898.
