The New Caledonian Barrier Reef is a coral reef located in the French Pacific Territory of New Caledonia . It is the second largest double barrier reef in the world after the Australian Great Barrier Reef .

The reef surrounds Grande Terre , the main island of New Caledonia, as well as the Île des Pins and other smaller islands to the south . Its total length is about 1500 km and it encloses an area of about 24,000 km². Inside the reef, the sea is around 25 m deep on average.
In 2008, UNESCO recognized the New Caledonian lagoons as a World Heritage Site with the designation of reef diversity and associated ecosystems . It was particularly pointed out that there are the most diverse reef structures in the world.
