Sully-sur-Loire is a French town with 5348 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loiret in the region Center-Val de Loire .
geography
The municipality is located on the left bank of the Loire , the bed of which is particularly wide and flat here. That is why there was a ford here as early as the early Middle Ages , and a bridge over the river since the 10th century. The bridge was destroyed and rebuilt several times in the following centuries. Sully-sur-Loire is best known for its castle. The place is often used as a starting point for tours to the castles of the Loire.
The lock
The Castle of Sully is located on the banks of the Loire - earlier it was almost the middle of the river. Therefore the moat is particularly wide and widened to a pond behind the castle. The facility was built or rebuilt between the 14th and 17th centuries. The oldest part of the complex is the high donjon facing the Loire, which is bordered by thick round towers at the corners. In the largest room of the castle, the hall of honor on the first floor of the donjon, Voltaire had his tragedy “Artémise” performed when he had found refuge in Sully, exiled from Paris.
Particularly worth seeing is the roof structure of the donjon, which is considered to be one of the most beautifully crafted and beautiful that have been preserved from the Middle Ages.
With the conversion of the castle from a defensive system to a representative castle under Maximilien de Béthune, duc de Sully , the growing Italian influence went hand in hand, which gradually replaced the Gothic sense of form.
The castle has been owned by the Loiret department since 1962 and is used as a museum.
