history

Due to its location on the Loire and the lively trade associated with shipping, Châteauneuf-sur-Loire was the economic center of the region and a popular place of residence for the first Capetians in the past . In the 11th century, Heinrich I had a fortress built here. At that time it was the youngest of the royal castles and was therefore given the name “Château Neuf”, meaning “New Castle”. In 1328, the last of the main line of the Capetian dynasty, Charles IV the Handsome, died here.

The fortress later served as the seat of the Valois and the Dukes of Orleans. Louis XIV sold the castle in 1646 to his state secretary and master of ceremonies Louis I. Phélypeaux de La Vrillière (1598–1681), who owned the old complex, of which the moats and walls were still in place are preserved, rebuilt into the so-called "Little Versailles". The magnificent baroque marble tomb Phélapeaux ' by Domenico Guidi is located in the remarkable church of Saint-Martial in Châteauneuf-sur-Loire, which was built around 1600.

In the 18th century the castle finally came into the possession of the Duke of Penthièvre, grandson of the Sun King and Madame de Montespan, who expanded it again. Already partially destroyed during the French Revolution , the architect to whom the property was sold had the main wing completely demolished in 1802. All that remains are the farm buildings, the orangery, the pavilions in the forecourt and an octagonal building with a domed hood. From the former castle square, a stepped terrace with canal, outside staircase and bridge leads down to the Loire lowlands and into the park, which was originally laid out by André Le Nôtre .

The "Musée de la Marine de Loire" is housed in the former horse stables. The centuries-old importance of the Loire as an economic factor is brought to life by means of everyday objects, clothes, jewelry, carpentry tools and, above all, a beautiful collection of faience from Nevers . A couple of reconstructed old sailing boats are lying on the quay.

Some scenes from the film Fahrenheit 451 were filmed here in 1966 , using the Safege Monorail test route.
