Pre-Romanesque church
The church of Germigny-des-Prés ( oratory of Germigny des Pres , Theodulf's chapel ) is a pre-Romanesque , Carolingian church building. It was completed in 806 and is now one of the oldest preserved church buildings in France. The church was founded by Theodulf of Orleans . Its architecture was based on the Palatine Chapel of Charlemagne in Aachen . The original central building in the form of a Greek cross was extended by a nave in the Middle Ages (the western abside had to be demolished).
The mosaic in the east abside is of particular interest. It depicts two angels and the ark in the middle. The Byzantine style mosaic, unique north of the Alps, was painted over during the French Revolution and was only rediscovered later.
