The Werbellin motorway church is a church on the federal motorway 11 Stettin - Berlin and is located a few kilometers from the motorway exit 11 "Werbellin" in the Werbellin district of the community of Schorfheide , which gave the nearby Werbellinsee its name. The church building has officially been a motorway church since September 23, 2001 and is open to all travelers during the day.

Building history

The Werbelliner Church, which is still a Protestant parish church, was built in 1913/1914 by the Berlin architect Georg Büttner in the so-called country style. The wooden entrance arbor and the wooden bell storey are proof of this. It was inaugurated on Epiphany Day (January 6th) in 1914.

Before that, a half-timbered church from 1776 had stood in the same place, which had to be demolished in 1910 due to dilapidation.

The church, built in 1914, had to withstand a number of adversities: lightning strikes (1958) and storms (1972), but also frost and water hit the increasingly dilapidated church. Despite expert advice to demolish the church, the parish council decided in 1976 to renovate and restore it. In 1978 the first work began, which could only be carried out in stages, as the construction funds could only flow sparingly. In the 80s, Detlef Schüler renovated part of the church on behalf of the municipality of Werbellin. His brother Eckehard Schüler was voluntarily responsible for the functionality of the church tower clock and the ringing of bells in the 1980s. After twenty years, the time had come: on October 20, 1996, the church was solemnly rededicated.

Furnishing

The architect Georg Büttner not only designed the external appearance of the church, but also designed the furnishings in the neo-baroque style, which is still preserved today.

The altar has a wooden top decorated with the Greek monogram of Christ Χ (chi) and Ρ (rho) - the first two letters of Χριστός (Christ), and the letters Α (alpha) and Ω (omega) as the first and the last Letters of the Greek alphabet and stand for "beginning" and "end".

This basic idea is continued and illustrated on the two glass windows in the choir: on the left the Christmas picture with the child in the manger (beginning), then on the right the death of Jesus on the cross (end), exaggerated by the biblical words that refer to Christ who lives in eternity .
