Chevilly is a French commune with 2,662 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loiret in the region Center-Val de Loire . It belongs to the canton of Meung-sur-Loire (until 2015: canton of Artenay ).
geography
Chevilly is on the edge of the forest of Orléans and the Beauce . Therefore, the village is particularly characterized by agriculture and forestry. The place is on Route Nationale 20. The Aérotrain test track, which has now been disused and which made the village famous, also passes right next to Chevilly .
history
Andeglou Castle has been in place of the village since 1186. This is why the place often bore this name in sources well into the 19th century. The current name goes back to a Gallic-Roman settlement called Seviliacum , which was in the immediate vicinity of Chevilly.
During the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, the castle of Chevilly was occupied by Bavaria and became their quarters.
Between 1969 and 1978, test drives of the special vehicle were carried out on the Aérotrain route under the leadership of Jean Bertin . The air cushion train established itself, u. a. Due to technical and economic hurdles, but never, so that the tests were discontinued.
