Maurice Genevoix (born November 29, 1890 in Decize ( Nièvre ), † September 8, 1980 in Xàbia , Alicante province , Spain ) was a French writer .

life and work

After completing his schooling at the Pothier high school in Orléans , he received access to study at the École normal supérieure , the French elite university for teachers in the high school and university sector. At the beginning of the First World War , Maurice Genevoix was drafted into military service and seriously wounded on April 25, 1915 near Les Éparges (18 kilometers southeast of Verdun).

In 14 of his works, Genevoix processed his war experiences and wrote reflections on his time as a soldier, based on notes made in the field. He dedicated the other part of his oeuvre to the landscapes, animals and people of his native Loire region. He also published stories from his stays in Canada (especially in the Rocky Mountains region ) and in Africa .

In 1925 Genevoix received the Prix ​​Goncourt for his novel Raboliot , published by Grasset .

In 1946 he was elected a member of the Académie française and served on the first committee of the SPAF Société des Poètes et Artistes de France (Society of Poets and Artists in France) from 1950 to 1960 .

Commemoration

His residence in the commune of Saint-Denis-de-l'Hôtel , which he bought in 1929, is still owned by the family today. Nearby, next to the church, an old winegrower's house has been converted into a museum dedicated to the life and work of Maurice Genevoix. His grave is on the Cimetière de Passy in Paris.

In November 2018, President Emmanuel Macron announced that in 2019 Genevoix's remains would be transferred to the Panthéon "on behalf of the 1914 generation" . The date was finally postponed to November 11, 2020.
