Bernard Maris

Bernard Maris (born September 23, 1946 in Toulouse , Haute-Garonne , † January 7, 2015 in Paris ) was a French economist , journalist , author and university lecturer . He was murdered in the terrorist attack on the editorial staff of Charlie Hebdo magazine .

Life

1968 gained Maris graduated from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Toulouse (Sciences Po de Toulouse) and in 1975 at the University of Toulouse I graduated . In the following two decades he worked in research at his alma mater and in 1994 became a professor at the local Institute for Political Studies , interrupted by a visiting professorship at the University of Iowa in the USA and a teaching position at the Central Bank of Peru .

Maris was a university professor in Paris at the Institute for European Studies at the University of Paris VIII . He was often referred to as a critic of globalization , as he was formerly a member of the Attac Science Council . In 1995 he was awarded the title of “Best Economist of the Year” by the French business magazine Le Nouvel Economiste .

Although he lived in the affluent Parisian 16th arrondissement , he ran in 2002 in the working-class district of the 10th arrondissement for the Les Verts party , to which he was close. In 2011, Maris became a member of the Supervisory Board of the Banque de France on the proposal of the President of the French Senate Jean-Pierre Bel .

Until her death in 2012, he was married to Sylvie Genevoix, who was formerly a member of the French Conseil supérieur de l'audiovisuel (CSA). Sylvie Genevois was the daughter of the French writer Maurice Genevoix .

Maris was killed on January 7, 2015 in the terrorist attack on the editorial staff of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo . He was buried in Montgiscard near Toulouse , where he spent part of his childhood.

Journalism and writing

In addition to more than a dozen books on business topics, Maris has published three novels and two essays. He also wrote for the magazines Marianne , Le Nouvel Observateur , the weekly magazine of Le Figaro , for Le Monde and for Charlie Hebdo , where he mostly used the pseudonym Oncle Bernard and u. a. Columns against the consumer society and the " capitalist furor " wrote.

He co-founded Charlie Hebdo's rebirth in 1992 and received dividends from his 11% equity stake, until 2008 he was Vice Director. In November 2014, he issued an appeal for donations for the magazine, which raised an amount of 18,000 euros.

On the radio, Maris was responsible for an economic chronicle at the state station France Inter and discussed economic news once a week at 7:50 a.m. Until 2009 he took part in a business program on the private television station I-Télé . At France 5 he also made regular appearances on economic topics.

After his assassination and the parliamentary elections in Greece, Arte broadcast the film National Debt - System Out of Control? , in which Bernard Maris explained, among other things: “Money is as vital to human life as the air we breathe. Just like water or air, money should be a common good, but it has become private property ”.
