The Scottish Football League First Division was held for the 23rd time in 1997/98 as only the second highest Scottish league under this name. In the second-highest division of men's football in Scotland , 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 matchdays in the 1997/98 season. Each team played four times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .

The championship was won by Dundee FC , which also secured participation in the 1998/99 Premier League season . Partick Thistle and Stirling Albion had to relegate to the Second Division . The top scorer with 15 goals was James Grady of Dundee FC.
