The Scottish Football League First Division was held for the 22nd time in 1996/97 as only the second highest Scottish league under this name. In the second-highest division of men's football in Scotland , 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 matchdays in the 1996/97 season. Each team played four times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship was won by FC St. Johnstone , which also secured participation in the 1997/98 Premier Division season . The Airdrieonians FC lost as runner-up in the promotion relegation against Hibernian Edinburgh . FC Clydebank and FC East Fife had to relegate to the Second Division . Top scorer with 19 goals was Roddy Grant from FC St. Johnstone.
