The Scottish Football League First Division was played for the 14th time in 1988/89 as only the second highest Scottish league . It was also the fourteenth edition of the men's second division football in Scotland under the name First Division . In the 1988/89 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 matchdays. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship was won by the Dunfermline Athletic team , which also secured participation in the 1989/90 Premier Division season . FC Kilmarnock and Queen of the South had to relegate to the Second Division . The top scorer with 22 goals was Kenneth MacDonald of Airdrieonians FC .
