The Scottish Football League Division Two was played for the fourth time in 1896/97 . After the introduction of Division One , it was the fourth edition, as the second highest football division for men in the Scottish Football League under the name Division Two .

In the 1896/97 season, 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 18 game days. Each team played once at home and away against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the clubs (with the same number of points) were placed tied. The championship won Partick Thistle , which secured promotion to the following Division One season 1897/98 .
