The Scottish Football League First Division was played for the twelfth time in 1986/87 as only the second highest Scottish league . It was also the twelfth edition of the men's second division football in Scotland under the name First Division . In the 1986/87 season, 12 clubs competed against each other in a total of 44 matchdays. Each team played four times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .

The championship was won by the Greenock Morton team , which also secured participation in the 1987/88 Premier Division season . In addition to Greenock , the runner-up Dunfermline Athletic also rose. Brechin City and FC Montrose had to relegate to the Second Division . The top scorer with 23 goals was Rowan Alexander from Greenock .
