The Scottish Football League Premier Division was played for the twelfth time in 1986/87 . It was also the 90th edition of a top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 1986/87 season, 12 clubs competed against each other in a total of 44 days. Each team played twice at home and twice against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The Glasgow Rangers won the Scottish Championship for the 38th time in the club's history. The Gers qualified as champions for the following European Champion Clubs' Cup 1987/88 season . As a cup winner , FC St. Mirren qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . Second, third and fifth placed Celtic Glasgow , Dundee United and FC Aberdeen qualified for the UEFA Cup .
The FC Clydebank and Hamilton Academical got into the end of the season First Division from. Celtic Glasgow's Brian McClair was the top scorer with 35 goals .
