The Scottish Football League Premier Division was played for the fifth time in 1979/80 . It was also the 83rd edition of a top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 1979/80 season 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 matchdays. Each team played twice at home and twice against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The FC Aberdeen won for the second time in club history after 1955 the Scottish championship. The Dons thus qualified as champions for the following European Cup of the 1980/81 season . The third and fourth placed, FC St. Mirren and Dundee United qualified for the UEFA Cup . As a cup winner , Celtic Glasgow qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . The FC Dundee and Hibernian got into the end of the season First Division from. With 25 goals, Doug Somner of FC St. Mirren was the top scorer.
