The Scottish Football League Division One was played for the 57th time in 1956/57 . It was also the 60th edition of the highest soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. It began on September 8, 1956 and ended on April 30, 1957. In the 1956/57 season, 18 clubs competed against each other in a total of 34 game days. Each team played once at home and away against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal quotient counted .
The championship won for the 30th time in their club history, the Glasgow Rangers . The Rangers qualified as champions for the following European Cup season-1957/58 . Dunfermline Athletic and Ayr United were relegated to Division Two at the end of the season . The top scorer was Hugh Baird of Airdrieonians FC with 33 goals .
