The Scottish Premier League was played for the third time in 2000/01 . It was also the 104th edition of the highest soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 2000/01 season, 12 clubs competed against each other in a total of 38 match days. Each team played once at home and away against every other team in the first round. After that, the league was divided into two halves, in which the teams play against each other again. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .

Celtic Glasgow won the Scottish Championship for the 37th time in the club's history. The Bhoys qualified as champions for the 2001/02 Champions League season . The runners-up, the Glasgow Rangers also played in the Champions League because of Scotland's improved position in the UEFA five-year standings . The defeated cup finalists Hibernian Edinburgh and fourth-placed FC Kilmarnock qualified for the UEFA Cup . The FC St Mirren rose to the end of the season First Division from. Celtic Glasgow's Henrik Larsson was the top scorer with 35 goals .
