The Divizia A 2000/01 was the 63rd season in the history of the Romanian football league . It started on August 4, 2000 and ended on June 13, 2001 . Games were closed from the end of November to the beginning of March ( winter break ). Champion became Steaua Bucharest . Before this season, the Divizia A was reduced to 16 teams.

The Divizia A played with 16 teams. The two last-placed teams got into the Divizia B from. The teams in places 13 and 14 wore relegation games against the two runners-up of the two groups in Divizia B to stay in Divizia A. There were three points for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. If two or more teams were tied at the end of the season, it was not the goal difference that decided , but the direct comparison.

    1Originally, the main sponsor of Fulgerul Bragadiru wanted to buy the Rocar Bucharest square for $ 1,200,000  and Rocar was to compete in Divizia B instead. This request was stopped by the Romanian football league and only a merger was approved. Thereupon Fulgerul gave up his plan and only bought the renaming of Rocar in Rocar Fulgerul Bragadiru.
    2 Rocar Fulgerul Bragadiru played his home games in Bucharest.
