UM Timișoara was a Romanian football club from Timișoara , Timiș County . He played in the top Romanian football league, Divizia A , in the 2001/02 season and reached the quarter-finals of the 1999 Romanian Cup .

history

UM Timișoara was founded in 1960 as a football club for the mechanical engineering company Uzinele Mecanice Timișoara . The club first played in the regional leagues of the Timiș County , before he was promoted to the third Romanian football league, Divizia C (now Liga III ), in 1967 . UMT was one of the top teams in the league in its first season and was promoted again in 1970. One step higher - in Divizia B (now Liga II ) - the club could not hold up and was relegated a year later.

It took only two years before UMT returned to Divizia B again: After the resurgence was narrowly missed in 1972, the club benefited in 1973 from the fact that Divizia B was expanded from two to three seasons. In Divizia B UMT appeared in Season III, which included the west of the country. The club finished the first season in third place, the following seasons in the secured midfield. In the 1980/81 season UMT slipped into the relegation zone for the first time and placed itself again in the midfield in the following year, before the club had to go back to Divizia C in 1983.

In the first season after relegation , UMT was in second place behind promoted Mureșul Deva , but only narrowly escaped relegation with a lead of two points. In the following two years, the club landed in the secured midfield, before he had to fight for relegation up to the last matchday in both the 1986/87 and 1987/88 seasons. From 1988 the development of UMT went up again. After two fourth places, the club made it back to Divizia B in 1991, but had to relegate again after one season.

After relegation, the club initially found itself in the Divizia C relegation battle. It was not until the 1994/95 season that he finished in midfield and oriented himself upwards. In 1997 the ascent succeeded, which was again followed by immediate descent. The 1998/99 season was the most successful in the club's history. In addition to the renewed promotion to Divizia B, UMT reached the quarter-finals in the Romanian Cup after victories against Astra Ploieşti and Na Sieional Bucharest , where the club was eliminated by Dinamo Bucharest .

In the Divizia B UMT was able to place itself in the midfield in the 1999/2000 season, before the club in 2001 for the first time succeeded in being promoted to the first Romanian league, the Divizia A (today League I ). The 2001/02 season , however, ended the club with a clear gap in last place and had to relegate again. The 2002/03 season turned into a disaster. Due to financial problems, the club could not play two games and was excluded from the championship after the 12th match day.

Due to the events of the previous season, UMT started the 2003/04 season of Divizia C with the mortgage of the deduction of 19 points and ended the season only in midfield. In the two following seasons, the club just missed the recovery. After a ninth place in the 2006/07 season, he had to relegate in 2008 from the division, which has now been renamed Liga III . A short time later it broke up.
