Placement criteria: 1st points - 2nd goal difference - 3rd wins - 4th direct comparison (points, goal difference, goals scored)

  • Promoted to Divizia B 1984/85
  • Relegated to Divizia D 1984/85
  • Special feature and background

There were only two points between the runner-up UM Timișoara and the penultimate Minerul Ghelar, who was relegated with it. According to the rules of the time, this corresponded to a win or two draws. A total of nine teams had the same score of 29.

In 2019, the German football magazine 11 Freunde published an article on the background to this narrow outcome. According to former UEFA referee Ioan Danciu, who directed matches in the league, many games are said to have been canceled. This was to keep the audience and management (the players were employees of mining companies and other companies) satisfied and prevent the players from being sent to work in the mining industry. In particular, the teams made sure that home games were won. The other teams would have helped the eventual promoted Mureșul Deva because he had a better stadium and better conditions than other clubs and thus better chances in the second division . The goalkeeper of Metalul Bocşa, Emil Vadasz reported that part of the special prizes awarded for victories had been offered to the opponent's players as a bribe and that “some games were decided at the kitchen table”.

    reception

The organization RSSSF , which is involved in collecting football data , maintains the closing table as the most balanced closing table known to them. In his book Almost Everything About Football, Christoph Biermann describes it as the “table of horror” and calls the season “probably the most eerily exciting season of all time”. Rob Smyth describes the fact that a team in the top half of the table not only relegated on goal difference, as the most ridiculous thing ever in the sports column The Joy of Six of the Guardian described. In addition to the tight result, Andy Mitten also noted the special feature that 8 of the 16 club names contain “Minerul” (Romanian for “miner”). Danny Baker and Danny Kelly assume that the introduction of the 3-point rule has made it much less likely that such a tight table situation will arise.

The economist Dorian Owen used the season as a case study in a publication about evaluating the balance of a sports league using the relative standard deviation .
