Liga III is the third highest division in Romanian football . It was founded in 1936 and was called Divizia C up to and including the 2005/06 season . The seasons 1992/93 to 1996/97, in which the division was called Divizia B , were an exception . The winners of the individual squadrons move up to League II , the last placed move down to League IV .
Until 1963 the competition was only held irregularly. After the first two seasons in 1936/37 and 1937/38, the Divizia C game operations were discontinued and only resumed for one season in 1946/47. After a further year break, a new attempt was made in 1948/49, but it was canceled after the first half of the season. The fourth edition of Divizia C took place in 1956, which was followed by the two seasons 1957/58 and 1958/59. After another four year break, the next season did not come until 1963/64, since the Divizia C has been held annually.
The 8th season of Divizia C achieved particular fame in the 1983/84 season due to the very close final result.
