Claudiu Iulian Niculescu (born June 23, 1976 in Slatina , Olt district ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach . He played a total of 351 games in the Romanian League 1 , the German Bundesliga and the Cypriot First Division . He has been without a club since April 2018.

Career

The striker began his career with FC IELIF Craiova in 1994 and moved to FC Drobeta Turnu Severin a year later . There he was not used and moved to the second division Electroputere Craiova , for whom he played from 1996 to 1998.

He made his debut in the Romanian first division on March 1, 1998, after moving to Universitatea Craiova . In 2001 he moved to Dinamo Bucharest for which he played until the winter of 2007, only interrupted by a six-monthly interlude with the Italian B-division club CFC Genoa in the 2002/2003 season. On January 1, 2008, he moved to MSV Duisburg . He made his debut in the Bundesliga on February 2, 2008 in the game against Borussia Dortmund . He was used in all of the remaining 17 games of the season for the Zebras and scored 4 goals, but could not avert the team's relegation from the Bundesliga.

For the following season Niculescu joined the Cypriot club Omonia Nicosia . There, however, he could not prevail and then returned to Dinamo Bucharest in January 2009. In the summer of 2010 moved to the Liga 1 promoted Universitatea Cluj . He contributed 13 goals to relegation in 2011 and was interim coach for two game days in November 2010 after Marian Pană terminated his contract. On March 13, 2012, his successor Ionuț Badea resigned after he had refused to withdraw the exclusion of Gabriel Boştină from the player squad under pressure from the patron Florian Walter. Claudiu Niculescu was then reappointed head coach, but initially remained active as a player. In addition, Emil Ursu , the previous coach of the third division club CS Buftea , was hired as a manager because Niculescu did not have the necessary coaching license.

Niculescu has played 326 first division appearances in Romania and scored 156 goals. In 2005 and 2007 he was each top scorer. There are also 77 games in the Romanian second division (36 goals) and eleven games in the Italian Serie B, in which he scored three goals. He has scored 18 goals in 37 European Cup appearances to date.

Niculescu stayed as a player in Cluj until September 2012 when he received an offer from second division FC Bihor Oradea to become head coach. He then ended his active career. However, the engagement in Oradea was short-lived. They parted ways again in December 2012. Since January 2013 he has been in charge of league competitor Damila Măciuca , with whom he narrowly missed promotion at the end of the 2012/13 season as third-placed of his season. He then took over CSM Râmnicu Vâlcea . In April 2014 they parted ways again. In July 2014 he took over league competitor CS Mioveni . From October 2015 he was without a club for 18 months before he became head coach of FC Voluntari in League 1 in April 2017 . He was released a year later.
