Athletic Club Omonia Nicosia ( Greek Αθλητικός Σύλλογος Ομόνοια Λευκωσίας , Athlitikós Sýllogos Omónoia Lefkosías , translated: " Athletic Club Eintracht Nikosia") is a Cypriot sports club from the capital Nicosia . In addition to the well - known, first-class football department, it also offers basketball , volleyball , cycling and futsal .
history
The club was founded in 1948 and joined the Cypriot association CFA in 1953 to play in the first division from then on. The first championship title in the club's history was achieved in the 1960/61 season. In 1965 the club won the cup for the first time when Apollon Limassol was clearly beaten 5-1 in the final. With six consecutive championship titles from 1974 to 1979, Omonia holds the record in Cypriot football. Above all, Sotiris Kaiafas , who won the Golden Shoe with 39 goals in 1976 , was an important pillar of the team.
After further championship titles were won in the 1980s and several cup victories were celebrated, Omonia lost its supremacy in Cypriot football in the 1990s to local rivals APOEL Nicosia and Anorthosis Famagusta . After the championship in 1993 and the cup win in 1994 against Anorthosis Famagusta, you had to wait until 2001 before you wrote a success story with the double again.
In 2010 the club won the Cypriot championship, but failed in the third qualifying round for the UEFA Champions League against the Austrian champions FC Red Bull Salzburg 1: 1 and 1: 4. In 2011 and 2012, the club won the cup twice in a row and now has 14 successes on the account. However, the club got into a financial crisis. In order to meet the UEFA criteria, the President launched an appeal for donations, which was also followed by several thousand fans.
In 2013 Omonia started the season with coach Toni Savevski. After the lack of positive results, he was replaced by Miguel Ángel . But he was released after only 37 days. Ex-player Kostas Kaiafas was then appointed as the new coach. Omonia finished the 2013/14 season in fifth place, the worst position in 56 years.

pendant
The supporters of Omonia belong to the left political camp. The club emerged from the split from APOEL Nicosia, who sided with the right in the Greek civil war . APOEL supporters have a reputation for being right-wing conservative. Therefore, duels between Omonia and APOEL are so-called risk games.
