The three Cypriot first division football teams Olympiakos Nicosia , APOEL Nicosia and Omonia Nicosia play their home games in this stadium. It is the home stadium of the Cypriot national football team . The stadium holds 22,859 spectators, making it the largest in the Republic of Cyprus .

history

The foundation stone was laid in 1998, just one year later the opening match between Omonia Nicosia and APOEL Nicosia took place on October 6, 1999 and ended 3: 3. It is the only stadium in the Republic of Cyprus that meets the UEFA criteria and is therefore also used as a venue by other Cypriot clubs for European Cup matches.

After the second Intifada in 2000, Israeli soccer clubs such as Hapoel Tel Aviv and Maccabi Haifa used it as their home stadium for some European Cup matches . In the quarter-finals of the 2001/02 UEFA Cup , Hapoel Tel Aviv played against AC Milan in the first leg in this stadium, which Hapoel won 1-0. All three home games of Maccabi Haifa in Group F of the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League took place at this stadium.

Due to the climatic conditions, some Olympic teams chose the stadium as a preparation site for the 2004 Olympic Games.

Five years later the Games of the Small States of Europe 2009 took place here.

From 1902 to 1999 there was a stadium in the city center of Nicosia, which was also called the GSP Stadium . It held 12,000 spectators, was also the most important football stadium in the Republic of Cyprus and was demolished in 1999. That is why today's sports facility is also known as the Neo GSP ( German  New GSP ).
