history
The national team of the Republic of Cyprus played the first unofficial friendly match against Israel in Tel Aviv on July 23, 1949. The game ended 3: 3. The Football Association of the Republic of Cyprus became a member of FIFA the previous year .
On November 23, 1960, after independence from Great Britain, the Republic of Cyprus played its first official international match. As part of qualifying for the 1962 World Cup , they met Israel again in Nicosia and drew 1-1.
The UEFA -Membership followed in 1962 and the following year the Republic of Cyprus achieved the first victory - a 3: 1 in a friendly against Greece .
On February 17, 1968, the Republic of Cyprus beat Switzerland 2-1 in a European Championship qualifier in Nicosia and thus achieved the island's first competitive game win.
The Republic of Cyprus reached a 1-1 draw against France in 1989 , which meant that they missed participation in the 1990 World Cup . The first away win came in 1992 with a 2-0 win against the Faroe Islands .
The qualification for the European Football Championship 2000 was missed by one point despite victories against the Spanish national football team and the selection of Israel . The defeat of Spain signaled the end of Javier Clemente's time as Spanish national coach.
The former Bundesliga player Rainer Rauffmann took on the citizenship of the Republic of Cyprus in 2002 and was used several times for the Republic of Cyprus in qualifying for the European Football Championship in 2004 .
In the qualifiers for the European Championship 2008 one of the greatest successes of the national football team of the Republic of Cyprus was achieved at home against the Irish team with a 5-2 victory. With a 1-1 home game, the first goal and the first point against the German selection was achieved . Three points were also scored against Wales. It was still not enough to qualify.
In qualifying for the World Cup in Brazil (2014), the Republic of Cyprus met Albania , Iceland , Norway , Switzerland and Slovenia , but failed to qualify again. In the qualifications for the European Championships in 2016 and for the World Cup in 2018 , Cyprus was penultimate in the group and in the qualification for the EM 2021 third from bottom, which again was not enough to qualify for the finals.
In the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League , Cyprus played in League C against Bulgaria , Norway and Slovenia. With one win against Slovenia, two draws and three defeats, it was only enough for third place.
