The football selection of the Vatican City ( Italian : Selezione di calcio della Città del Vaticano ) consists of Swiss guards, papal councils and museum guards. As the Vatican is neither a member of the world football association FIFA nor of the European football association UEFA , the team does not take part in qualifying matches for football world and European championships . It is set up by the umbrella organization Federazione Vaticanese Giuoco Calcio .

Because only a few hundred people have Vatican citizenship and these cannot be dispensed with in large numbers for a long period of time, the team can only very rarely play friendly matches. The attempt to participate in the so-called World Cup for non-members of FIFA failed because of this very problem.

Colloquially and in media perception, the football selection is often referred to as the national team .

Stadion

Since the Vatican City is too small for a soccer field, the "home games" outside the city-state are played in the Stadio Pio XII . The Stadio Pio XII is located in Albano Laziale . The stadium can seat around 1500 people.

Jerseys

There are only 400 of the football team's jerseys in the Vatican City, all of which are owned by the Vatican. The technical sponsor is the Italian sporting goods manufacturer Sportika .

In April 2018, the football team signed a three-year sponsorship agreement with the Poderi di San Pietro winery and for the first time in its history has jersey advertising.

Trainer

Giovanni Trapattoni trained the selection in 2010

Women team

There was a first women's football game by Vatican employees in summer 2018. A women's team, the Vatican FC , of the Vatican was founded in 2018 and has actually been in existence since May 2019. It is made up of employees from various companies, such as the children's clinic, and institutions of the Vatican , as well as relatives - wives and daughters - of employees. The team of 25 women can be formed from a pool of around 750 female employees in addition to the relatives of the employees. The captain is the Cameroonian striker Eugene Tcheugoue , who works in the Vatican Curia for Laity, Family and Life . It played its first game against the women of AS Roma .

It was invited to a friendly game on June 22, 2019 at the 20th anniversary of the Austrian third division club FC Mariahilf (FCM) in Vienna. In support of the LGBTIQ movement, the corner flags were colored rainbow . When after the exchange of gifts, while playing the Vatican hymn the players from Mariahilf " showed " Pro Choice "messages written on their stomach and back - that is, appeals that women have the right to have an abortion ," said the nuncio in Austria , Pedro López Quintana , stop the game.
