The entrance to the "crypt"

The crypt is a homeless facility operated by Caritas of the Archdiocese of Vienna in the 6th district of Mariahilf in Vienna in rooms below the Mariahilfer Church (often: Barnabitenkirche). It has existed since 1986, is open around the clock and offers meals, shower facilities, overnight accommodation and medical and psychiatric care.

history

At Advent 1986, on the initiative of Albert Gabriel (born 1936 in Sankt Peter am Wimberg ), a Roman Catholic theologian and Salvatorian priest , with the support of the students of the nearby Amerling grammar school below the Mariahilfer Church in the crypt - a former plague cemetery - a Warming room set up for the homeless. Initially it was open for two hours a day and served tea and simple hot food. The crypt has been open 24 hours a day since October 1994 with the support of the Vienna Social Fund and since July 1996 Caritas Vienna has been the supporting organization of the facility.

Statistics and Financing

Free food is given out three times a day, in 2007 that was a total of 81,897 food servings. Furthermore, there were 25,477 overnight stays in 2007 and 1,165 were cared for by social workers, the proportion of women being around 15%.

Half of the financing is provided by the Vienna Social Fund - around 500,000 euros in 2008 - and the other half through donations. In 2012, 97,285 meals were served - more than ever before - and there were 19,453 overnight stays, slightly more than in 2011.

Expansion and second crypt

In 2009, Caritas opened the second crypt in Vienna's 18th district, Währing, especially for EU foreigners .

Due to the increasing space requirement at the location below the Mariahilfer Church, the expansion of the crypt began in several phases on August 31, 2012. On September 19, 2013, an above-ground extension was opened for day care for the homeless with daylight and 450 square meters of floor space in and next to the vicarage of the Barnabite Church .
