Second crypt

The Second Crypt is a Caritas Vienna homeless facility in the 18th district of Währing .

Location and architecture

The second crypt is at the address Lacknergasse 98 in the Weinhaus district .

The building by the architect Jože Plečnik is a reinforced concrete structure in the neo-empire style or neoclassicism . In the external appearance, strict forms meet decorative elements. The house, originally built as a child protection station and later used as a men's home, has a functional floor plan. The aisle is laid out like a hall. It is bordered by glazed ceiling panels at both ends, which mean that daylight falls through all floors down to the ground floor.

The building is a listed building .

history

The building, commissioned by Johann Evangelist Zacherl, co-founder of the Catholic Association for Child Protection Stations , was built in 1907 and was initially used as a child protection station. The Währing politician Josefine Kurzbauer was particularly active as a welfare worker and social worker. In 1983, Caritas made the building available to Sister Grata of the Sisters of Charity of Vincent de Paul , who began feeding homeless men there. The association Homeless Aid Sister Grata was founded with the help of the dean Norbert Roth to provide financial and moral support to the nun .

After the student protests in October 2009 were after the evacuation of the main auditorium of the University of Vienna and 80 homeless people who had stayed there without accommodation. Accommodation in the Caritas homeless facility Gruft in Vienna- Mariahilf was not possible because no EU foreigners could be accommodated there. This took the Caritas of the Archdiocese of Vienna as an opportunity to open the second tomb in the Lacknergasse as 24-hour emergency shelter throughout the year. Originally this was intended as a temporary measure, but in 2011 crypt 2 became permanent.
