Football in the Vatican City

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vatican City has its own selection team . However, as the state does not have a football field that meets FIFA standards, Vatican City is neither a member of FIFA nor UEFA .

The Vatican determines the champion in its own league consisting of 16 teams and holds various cup competitions.

The football selection consists mainly of residents of Rome and rarely plays international matches against teams from other countries and then mostly against other small states such as San Marino or Monaco .

Vatican League

In 1972 Sergio Valcio founded the Vatican football league Attività Calcistica dei Dipendenti Vaticani (ACDV) to do something for the physical fitness and the community spirit of the Vatican employees. The teams are recruited from the administrative departments of the Vatican (such as the museums, the radio or the post office). The games of the Vatican League take place in the Roman suburb of Primavalle , as there is no sports field in the Vatican. The teams of the league compete against each other on a small field with four field players and a goalkeeper . This is necessary because the teams do not get enough players together. The league does not take place every year and the master does not qualify for international competitions.

Cleric Cup

Main article: Clericus Cup

The Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone , known as a football fan , initiated the Clericus Cup ("Cleric Cup"), which first took place in 2007. The teams are made up of clergy and religious who study in Rome and are accordingly international. The rules have been changed slightly, for example, in addition to the red and yellow cards , there is also a blue card , which the punished player has to sit out for five minutes.
