Football in Denmark

Football is the most popular sport in Denmark if you take the total number of players as a measure. According to the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, around 290,000 of the population of Denmark, from all age groups, should be active in a football club.

The Danish Football Association was founded in 1889. Denmark played their first international match against France at the 1908 Olympic Games in London and won the game 9-0.

Morten Olsen is the current coach of the Danish national football team . The team has competed seven times at European Championships and won the title in Sweden in 1992 . At world championships was Denmark previously represented four times and once reached the quarter and twice the knockout stages. In addition, the King Fahd Cup was won in 1995 from which the Confederations Cup emerged .

Main sponsor and namesake of as Superligaen known highest Danish league is Alka .

The 1st division is ranked as the second highest division below the super league .

A national cup competition , the Landspokalturneringen , has been held since 1955 .

Danish clubs in Europe

Danish clubs (apart from the Royal League) have not yet been able to win a European competition. That's why they are regulars in European competitions. For the group stage of the UEFA Champions League to have been able to Brøndby IF (1998/99), Aalborg BK of (2008/09), FC Copenhagen (2006/07 2010/11 2013/14 and 2016/17,) and FC Nordsjælland (2012/13) qualify. The best result of a Danish team at European level came in the 1990/91 season, when Brøndby IF reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup and narrowly missed the final against AS Roma (0-0, 1-2).
