The Aalborg Boldspilklub ( AaB for short - the double A had the status of its own letter in the Danish alphabet until the introduction of Å ), translated Ballspielverein Aalborg is a sports club in Aalborg, Denmark . In the club, which was originally founded as a cricket club, the members now play football , ice hockey and handball . The football team in particular, which has been Danish champions four times, is internationally known.

history

1885 to 1944: creation

AaB was founded on May 13, 1885 as the Aalborg Cricket Club . The founding fathers were primarily English engineers who built up the Jutland railway network during this time and wanted a sports club based on the local model. It is thanks to this English influence that football was played there just a few years later. Consequently, the cricket club was renamed Aalborg Boldspilklub in 1906 . First, the AaB teams played in dark blue shirts with a red stripe on the chest. Today's playing clothes - a red and white striped shirt with white trousers - were, according to legend , copied from BK Skjold , a Copenhagen club. In 1920 the Aalborg Stadium (today: Aalborg Parken ) was opened, where the club still plays today. The fans swear by the good atmosphere in the stadium, which is close to the center and has no cinder track . In the following decades, AaB did not have any great sporting ambitions.

1945 to 1990: professional football in the 1st division

From 1945 to 1990 the 1st division was the highest league in Danish football. As a founding member, Aalborg just barely held the class in 1945/46 and secured itself with only one point more on the tenth and thus relegated club Boldklubben 1909 . With only nineteen goals of their own, AaB was the weakest attack in the league. In the following year , however, the team could not keep relegation, so that they were relegated with only nine points from eighteen games. In 1958, the season, which ran from summer to summer, was adapted to the calendar and played out in this. Only after the end of the season in 1962 Aalborg managed to rise again, but could not hold in the first division in the comeback season . After only one year in the second division, the AaB kickers returned to the House of Lords for the 1965 season and immediately took seventh place and thus placed themselves in the secured midfield. With a total of 21 points on the credit side, the club won more than ever in the first division. In 1967 the team improved this performance to 23 points and fifth place. In 1968, Henning Munk Jensen was also named Footballer of the Year in Denmark . Again, two years later , was even Aalborg third and only master himself had to Boldklubben 1903 and Kjøbenhavns Boldklub beaten. In the game year 1971 , the relegation to the second division followed, from which the club and team quickly recovered and in 1973 played again in the first. This was increased to 16 teams in 1975 , with AaB seventh and fourth the following year . These good results were followed by disillusionment in 1977 and BK had to go into league two for the fourth time, but secured an immediate promotion. With the worst final result, Aalborg ended their season in 1980 . Only six points and 85 goals conceded in thirty games meant a negative league record. This relegation meant a sporting break and only at the end of the 1986 season, when they were second behind Herfølge BK in the 2nd division, the club managed to move back into the Danish House of Lords. Up until 1989, the club just managed to stay in the league every year. When it was decided in 1990 to found a new league, the team had to earn at least eighth place in order to secure a place in it. However, it was only enough for tenth place, which, however, enabled a move into relegation games against second division clubs. There Aalborg then prevailed 4-0 and 6-5 against Boldklubben in 1909.

One of the greatest successes of the years between 1945 and 1990 was winning the regional cup gymnastics wrestling in 1966 and 1970. However, the people of Aalborg had more suffering than Freud with this competition: despite having taken nine finals so far, they could only win twice. With six defeats in the final in a row, they have earned the reputation of being unlucky or the "eternal runner-up".

1991 to 2010: Introduction of the super league and national establishment

In 1991 , in the newly created Super League , the club played long against relegation. With only ten teams, the team then works out a two-point lead over Silkeborg IF , the relegation participant to remain in the top Danish football league. With 29 meetings of their own, the team made the second most dangerous attack, but with 33 goals conceded it was also the most vulnerable defensive (together Silkeborg IF) of the Superliga. From summer 1991 the game mode was changed in Denmark. Before that, however, they reached the final of the national cup. After 0-0 in regular time against Odense BK , the team then failed 3: 4 on penalties . In the 1991/92 season , the championship was held in two rounds. In the autumn season, Aalborg finished fourth, qualifying for the spring round. There it was only enough for fifth place, which meant that one could not qualify for an international competition. With Peter Møller , however, they had the best attacker in the league in their own ranks. In the following year , the club managed to participate in the 1993/94 UEFA Cup season . Peter Møller was also able to defend his title with 22 goals. In addition, they faced Odense again in the cup final, but then had to admit defeat for the second time after the team lost 2-0. In the UEFA Cup, after a surprising 1-0 first-leg win in the first round against Deportivo La Coruña, they lost 5-0 in the return encounter, which meant they were eliminated. For the 1994/95 season , the club achieved the national coup. After the autumn season, in which they finished second, the team prevailed against Brøndby IF , last year's champions Silkeborg IF and five other teams and became Danish champions for the first time in the club's history. In the subsequent qualifying matches for the Champions League , the Danes could not prevail against Dynamo Kiev , but eventually advanced to the main round after it became apparent that the Ukrainians had tried to bribe the referee with a fur coat, among other things . In the group stage, the team then met the teams from Panathinaikos Athens , FC Nantes and FC Porto . With a goal difference of 5:12 and only four points from six games, the team was eliminated clearly after the preliminary round. The club celebrated their first victory in the Champions League on October 25, 1995 against the Greek club Panathinaikos, when they prevailed 2-1 in front of their home crowd. It was also the only defeat for the Athens club in the group stage. In 1996, Lynge Jakobsen, who had been active as a player for the club in the 1970s, was hired for the post of sports director. In the following years further successes were celebrated under him. After the second championship in 1999 they met again on Kiev - and lost - this time without fur. The other international appearances in the UEFA Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup usually ended in the first round. Nevertheless, AaB managed to establish itself among the best teams in Denmark and also to prosper economically: The licensed player division AaB Sports A / S has been listed as a stock corporation on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange since 1999 . In 2007 the club won the UEFA Intertoto Cup and qualified for the UEFA Cup. In 2008 the club was able to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League through the qualifying games. Before that, they won the Danish Super League in 2007/08 with a nine point lead over runner-up FC Midtjylland . With Jeppe Curth , the club also provided the best attacker in the league. He got 17 hits in 33 encounters.

2011 to today: Current development

Since the beginning of the 2010/11 season , coach Magnus Pehrsson's team struggled against relegation. In October, a new man, Kent Nielsen, was brought on the sidelines to avert the threat. Before the 33rd matchday, Aalborg BK had three points ahead of a relegation zone. On the last day of the match, which took place on May 29, 2011, the team was a guest at FC Copenhagen, the eventual champions. The game was lost 2-0. But luck was still on Aalborg's side. Because Randers FC did not get beyond a 2-2 draw against Esbjerg fB in their home stadium . Exactly these two teams occupied the two relegation places, with which Aalborg BK managed to stay in the league despite defeat.

In the 2013/14 season , Aalborg BK became Danish champions for the fourth time.

useful information

  • In 1992, attacker Peter Møller was the first AaB striker to win the top scorer since the introduction of the Superliga . For this he needed 17 hits. He was also the first to defend that title. Until 2005, when Steffen Højer was the top scorer for the second time in a row, Møller was the only attacker ever to have been the best scorer in the league twice.
  • To date (March 2011), Aalborg BK has been the top scorers in the Superliga five times. These goods:
  • Actor Jimmy Nielsen completed a total of 375 games in the shirts of Aalborg BK and Vejle BK (342 of which for AaB), which gave him second place in the list for most games in the Superliga.
  • Henning Munk Jensen became the first AaB player to be voted Footballer of the Year in Denmark in 1968. In 1975 he succeeded again. Another Aalborg actor has not yet received this honor.
