Hapoel Tel Aviv ( Hebrew הפועל תל-אביב) is an Israeli sports club based in Tel Aviv . The association has its origins in the Israeli labor movement and belongs to the workers' sports association Hapoel (Hebrew for workers ).

The club's soccer team, which currently plays in the top division of the country, the Ligat ha'Al and is based in the Bloomfield Stadium, is particularly well-known . Hapoel Tel Aviv achieved international fame with its victory in the first edition of the Cup of Asian Masters in 1967. When it entered the final again in 1970, however, the club lost in the final. 2010 was the first time in the club's history to participate in the UEFA Champions League . In the 2016/17 season , the club ran into financial problems, whereupon the association deducted 9 points. This subsequently led to relegation to the second highest Israeli league, Liga Leumit . In the following year, however, he immediately rose again as a master.

Club history

Attempts at founding Hapoel go back to 1925. It got its current form in 1927 after a merger with Allenby FC . In 1928 he won the first football tournament in what was then the British Mandate of Palestine , the forerunner of today's State Cup of Israel , and in the course of that tournament defeated not only Jewish teams but also Arab and British teams. Further successes in cup competitions followed in 1934, 1937, 1938 and 1939.

Sporting successes

In 1957, nine years after the establishment of the independent Israeli state, the club succeeded in winning the Israeli championship for the first time. Further championship titles followed in 1966, 1969, 1981, 1986 and 1988. Hapoel Tel Aviv was successful in the cup in 1961, 1972 and 1983.

The club gained international fame when it won the final of the first edition of the Cup of Asian Masters in 1967 against the Malay representative Selangor FA . In 1970 the team again advanced to the final of this competition, but this time lost to the Iranian capital club Taj , which has since been renamed Esteghlal Tehran .

After a long break, the club was again Israeli champions in 2000. In qualifying for the UEFA Champions League 2000/01 , however, the team was eliminated in the second round against SK Sturm Graz . In the following championship season 2000/01 Tel Aviv was runner-up, which qualified for participation in the 2001/02 UEFA Cup . There the team defeated FC Chelsea , Lokomotiv Moscow and FC Parma, among others . Only AC Milan could stop Tel Aviv in the quarter-finals. In the following years the club was mostly one of the best Israeli teams and played regularly in European competitions, even if there were no sensations like 2001/02. In the 2006/07 season, the team reached the group stage in the UEFA Cup and qualified third for the round of 32, where they were eliminated 2-1 and 0-4 by the Glasgow Rangers.

In the 2006/07 season, the club missed qualifying for the UEFA Cup over the league level on points with the meanwhile more successful city rival Maccabi Tel Aviv only because of the poorer goal difference, but still managed to qualify as a cup winner for the UEFA Cup. In the 2009/10 season, Hapoel played in the UEFA Europa League .

Qualification game against FC Salzburg Champions League Play-off 2010/11

In the 2009/10 season, Hapoel won the championship title in the last match in stoppage time. In addition, the double was won by winning the cup. Thus Hapoel Tel Aviv entered the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League in the 2010/11 season, where FK Željezničar Sarajevo from Bosnia and then the Kazakh champions FK Aqtöbe were defeated in the third qualifying round. In the play-off round, they defeated the Austrian champions FC Red Bull Salzburg 3-2 and 1-1 in two legs and thus made it into the Champions League group stage. In Group B, Hapoel played with Olympique Lyon , FC Schalke 04 and Benfica Lisbon . The first game against Benfica Lisbon was lost 2-0, the second game against Olympique Lyon Hapoel lost 3-1, and in the third game against FC Schalke 04 there was also a 3-1 defeat.
