The Maccabi Netanja FC ( Hebrew מועדון כדורגל מכבי נתניה- Moadon Kaduregel Maccabi Netanya ) is an Israeli football club from Netanya founded in 1934 .

history

The association was founded in 1934 in the Israeli city of Netanya. Since then, they have played in the Israel First League for over 40 seasons .

Maccabi Netanja had its most successful times in the 1970s and early 1980s. At that time, the Israeli League was also known colloquially as "Netanya and the other 15". A large part of the then Israeli national soccer team came from Netanya.

In 1978, the club was able to get the double by winning the state cup and league championship title .

In the mid-1990s, the club rose to the second division ( Liga Leumit ) and stayed there for several years. In the meantime, Maccabi Netanja was able to rise again, but had to accept the direct relegation.

Since the 2005/06 season the club has been back in the top division. There is strong local rivalry with Beitar Nes Tubruk, who is also based in Netanya .

In 2006 the association was bought by the German businessman Daniel Jammer for one million euros. He brought many new players to the team and a. the Costa Rican national record player Luis Marín . Furthermore, he built up a youth work and recruited many investors and sponsors for the club.

In the 2008/09 season, the German coach and former soccer world champion Lothar Matthäus took over as the club's coach. The contract, which originally ran until 2010, was terminated at the end of the season. At European level, the team suffered a bitter defeat in the second leg against Galatasaray Istanbul 6-0 on August 6, 2009. Netanya lost the first leg 4-1.

The 2011/12 season ended fourth in the table, level on points with the runner-up, which meant they qualified for the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League in the following season. There they met the Finnish representative Kuopion Palloseura , against whom they were eliminated due to the away goals rule (1: 2 home defeat in the first leg, 1: 0 away win in the second leg). In the league, in which they played in the newly opened Netanya Stadium from October 2012 , they occupied the penultimate place, which meant relegation.
