Netanya ( Hebrew נתניה[nɛ'tanja]; Arabic نتانيا, DMG Natāniyā ; also Netanya or Nathania ) is a city in Israel . It lies between Tel Aviv and Hadera in the Sharon Plain on the Israeli Mediterranean coast . It is embedded between the Poleg River and the Wingate Institute in the south and the Avichail River in the north. In 2018, Netanya had a population of 217,244. The coastal strip on which Netanya is located is characterized by a subtropical climate.

There are several places of interest in the urban area of ​​Netanya:

Nature reserve "Giv'at Ha-Irisim" is one of the largest concentrations of endemic in Israel and extremely rare on some sand dunes along the coast Schwertlilienart Iris atropurpurea (purple Iris). The coat of arms of the city also refers to this flower, also known as the Sharon Lily after the Song of Songs 2: 1 .

Nature reserve “Schlulit HaChoref / Schlulit Dora”: In the south of the city there is a pond that only fills with water in winter. This is one of the last winter ponds in Israel (almost all of the others were dried out or built over). As a biotope, it is of great importance for many animal species.

In the “Ne'ot Herzl” district there is a protected 900-year-old mulberry and fig tree, which has already been mentioned many times in ancient scriptures and is located on the old Haifa- Jaffa route .

The approximately 11 km long beach of Netanya is one of the most beautiful in Israel. A special feature is that it lies below a cliff up to 30 m high.

Netanya's economic focus lies in the areas of agriculture (cultivation of citrus fruits), the diamond industry (the city is a center of the Israeli diamond industry alongside Ramat Gan ), tourism, processing industry and services, especially in telecommunications. In 2005 Cellcom , the largest provider of cellular services in Israel with 2.5 million customers, moved its headquarters to Netanya.

Netanya's modern industry is mainly divided into four industrial parks with over 300 companies. Netanya was founded in 1929 as a moshawa (agricultural settlement of individual farmers); the focus of agriculture was on the cultivation of citrus fruits . The city was named after Nathan Straus (1848 Otterberg / Rheinpfalz -1931 New York, German-American benefactor, Zionist , co-founder and co-owner of the Macy’s department store in New York).

The city received a significant growth spurt in the early 1930s with the construction of the road from Hadera to Kfar Saba and the drainage of swamps in the area.

Jewish immigrants from Europe let the population rise sharply. Today Netanya is the central place of the Sharon Plain and a popular seaside resort with many hotels; There is a promenade several kilometers long along the coast.

  • September 9, 2001: A car bomb explodes at the Beit Lid junction near Netanya, injuring 17 people. One person killed in the attack was believed to be the attacker himself.
  • March 9, 2002: An attack with firearms and hand grenades in the area of ​​the “Margoa” hotel in Netanya, killing two Israelis and injuring 50. The victims are Israel Yihe, 27, from Bnei Brak and nine-month-old Avia Malka from South Africa. The al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades confessed to the act.
