The King Charles Spaniel is an FCI recognized British breed of dog ( FCI Group 9, Section 7, Standard No. 128 ).

Origin and history

The King Charles Spaniel originated from the dwarf spaniels that were common in European courts. The first club was founded in 1885 and the breed was recognized by the Kennel Club in 1892 .

This little spaniel can weigh up to 6.3 kg. The hair is long, silky and straight. Light waves are allowed. Separate names are common for the different varieties of the breed:

  • Black and Tan: Intense, glossy black with lively, mahogany-brown markings on the muzzle, limbs, chest, on the inside of the ears and under the tail
  • Tricolor, Prince Charles: Black spots well distributed on a pearly white background and bright red-brown markings on the cheeks, on the inside of the ears and under the tail
  • Blenheim: chestnut-red markings well distributed on a pearly white background
  • Ruby: Solid color, intense chestnut red.

The ears are set low, hanging completely flat on the cheeks, very long and well fringed.
