Spaniel is an umbrella term for some breeds of hunting dogs .

The spaniels belonged to the classic browsing dogs and have been known as the form of hunting dogs since the Middle Ages. In the 19th century, the English formed the various spaniel breeds from this type of work, of which only the English Springer Spaniel and the English Cocker Spaniel are used in larger numbers in Germany.
