The Epagneul Breton is a French dog breed recognized by the FCI ( No. 95, Gr. 7, Sec. 1.2 ) .
Origin and history
The Epagneul Breton comes from Brittany in France . It is arguably the most common small spaniel- type pointing dog in this country . From the beginning of the 20th century it was specifically refined in breeding. Until then, the original Bretons were a tough working breed with a stocky build. Although of the spaniel type, he is not a poking dog , but a classic pointing dog. He is not particularly suitable as a family dog because he has a pronounced urge to move and suffers from underemployment.
Brief description
Up to 52 cm tall hunting dog in white / red, white / black, white / brown or tricolor, with a medium overhand spotting . Its fur is fine, not silky, and can be plain or very slightly wavy, never frizzled. The ears are set high, triangular, fairly wide, rather short, very mobile when the dog is attentive or at work. The tail of the dogs is set high. Many epagneuls are born without a tail ( anuria ). The docking of the tail is banned in Germany and many countries of the EU. An exception can be made for dogs used for hunting.
Hunting properties
The Epagneul Breton is a versatile pointing dog for hunting small game. This dog is characterized by its fine-nosed nose, its firm protrusion and the concentrated search for fields. His work after the shot is also excellent, even in difficult conditions. The Epagneul Breton is a reliable loser and is also used for welding work due to its excellent nose .
