Browsing dog
Browsing dogs are hunting dogs that search independently, systematically and thoroughly in thickets or in reeds for large and / or small game , i.e. in confusing terrain and outside the control of the dog handler . If the dog finds game , it becomes louder and drives the game towards the hunters waiting outside . This behavior is an instinctual behavior that the dog inherited from its ancestor, the wolf .
These dogs are also suitable for searching for wounded game ( welding work ) and for bringing ( retrieving ) shot, light game.
The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) lists search dogs in their breed system in group 8, section 2. There, the following breeds are referred to as search dogs:
- American cocker spaniel
- Clumber Spaniel
- German Wachtelhund
- English Cocker Spaniel
- English Springer Spaniel
- Field Spaniel
- Kooikerhondje
- Sussex Spaniel
- Welsh Springer Spaniel
From Hunting Dog Association are recognized in Germany as a flushing dogs from this list, the English Cocker Spaniel German Spaniel and the English Springer Spaniel.
