The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a British dog breed recognized by the FCI (No. 126, Gr. 8, Sec.2) .
Origin and history
The Springer Spaniel is one of the oldest hunting dog breeds in Great Britain and is considered the ancestor of all Spaniels (except for the Clumber Spaniel ). In the past, he was supposed to drive the game into gillnets or open terrain to make it huntable for greyhounds and hawks . The name is derived from the English description: They spring game into open (With his powerful jumps he drives the game out of cover). Today he is a forager and retriever and is also used in dog sports . He is closely related to the English Springer Spaniel .
description
The coat of the Welsh Springer Spaniel, which is up to 48 cm tall, consists of half-long, dense, straight, silky hair that is dirt-repellent. Curls are not allowed. It has a deep red drawing on a pearly white background. The ears, chest, stomach and legs are more densely hairy. The body is compact, strong and balanced. The Welsh Springer Spaniel is shorter and smaller than the English Springer Spaniel. Its back is short and straight and its muzzle is angular. Its medium-sized, almond-shaped eyes are hazel or dark brown. The tail is carried below the level of the back and the relatively small ears have a deep set, hang down close to the cheeks and taper to a point at the end.
Essence
The Welsh Springer Spaniel is intelligent, gentle, balanced, obedient and obedient, sociable, happy and friendly. He has a strong hunting instinct , is nimble and sometimes a little stubborn. He has an excellent sense of smell and also works.
maintenance
The Welsh Springer Spaniel, like all other spaniel breeds, should be trimmed regularly (about every 8 weeks). This means cutting and shortening the hair on and under the paws, on and under the ears, the tail and the neck.
Since the Welsh Springer Spaniel was or still is a hunting dog, it needs a lot of exercise to stay fit. If you give him this - he fetches and likes to swim - then he remains calm in the apartment.
