List of domestic dogs

The Continental Pygmy Spaniel (originally Epagneul Nain Continental ) is an FCI- recognized breed of dog from France and Belgium ( FCI Group 9, Section 9, Standard No. 77 ). In addition to the breed itself, the FCI also designates the section to which the (provisionally accepted) Russkiy Toy also belongs, with the name of the Continental Miniature Spaniel .

There are two varieties of the continental paniel breed : the Papillon ( French : butterfly ), whose large protruding ears are reminiscent of a butterfly, and the Phalène (French: moth ), whose ears hang down. A CACIB is awarded separately for both varieties .

Origin and history

Towards the end of the 19th century, the systematic breeding of miniature spaniels began in France and Belgium and a pedigree dog in the sense of today's dog breeding emerged. A first breed standard for the Continental Miniature Spaniel was established in 1905. As early as the 13th century, dogs of this type were depicted in connection with noble people on Italian oil paintings. They were also very popular as pets at the French court and in the British royal family.

description

The continental dwarf spaniel is a small dog breed with a shoulder height of up to 28 cm and approx. 5 kg.

Its long, silky fur must be white in the basic color and has colored markings. The color variants range from chestnut red to reddish brown, brown to black, liver brown is not allowed. The red-brown hues can be combined with black hair tips (called sable). The badges should be distributed over the head and body, whereby the basic white color must predominate on the body. The respective color is predominant on the head and ears, a white blaze is desired. The fur must not have an undercoat . The back is straight, the fringed tail is carried bent over it. He has straight, slender legs with good angles and rabbit paws. His head should be small and round according to his height. This and the expressive eyes create the child's schema . The almond-shaped eyes are surrounded by a dark rim.

The Phalene differs from the Papillon only in the shape of the ears, which should hang down on the side of the head and lie flat. In puppies it usually takes a few weeks to tell whether the ears are erect (Papillon) or carried hanging down (Phalene). Both ear shapes are wide, large and rounded. When erect, they look like spread butterfly wings. They have fringes on the edges, like the tail, and are very mobile / expressive.

The continental miniature spaniel is alert, playful, lively, friendly and graceful, but also robust.
